THE OLD MAN MADE ONE PHONE CALL — MINUTES LATER, A FLEET OF BLACK G-WAGENS ARRIVED, AND THE TATTOOED MAN REALIZED HE HAD MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE

The last piece of the broken plate stopped spinning beneath the table.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The modern dining room, which only moments earlier had been filled with laughter, suddenly felt unnaturally quiet.

Outside the large windows, daylight was fading.

The sky had turned gray-blue, and the first lights of the parking lot had switched on.

The tattooed man stood with his hands at his sides.

His confident smile was gone.

Through the window, another black Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen slowly entered the parking lot.

Then another.

And another.

Their headlights swept across the glass walls of the restaurant.

Behind the tattooed man, the bikers stopped laughing.

One of them stepped closer to the window.

“How many are there?”

Nobody answered.

The elderly gentleman remained seated.

His long white beard rested against the collar of his white shirt. His black suit was perfectly arranged, and his expression remained completely calm.

The black smartphone was still in his hand.

The tattooed man turned toward him.

“Who are these people?”

The old man looked at him.

“You asked me a question.”

“Yes.”

“And now you have your answer.”

The younger man laughed nervously.

“You think a few expensive cars are going to scare me?”

The elderly man shook his head.

“No.”

He placed the phone on the table.

“They aren’t here to scare you.”

That answer made the room even quieter.

The front door opened.

The first man entered.

He wore a dark suit and a simple white shirt. He wasn’t carrying anything visible, and he didn’t look aggressive.

Two more men followed him.

Then two more.

They stopped several meters from the tables and waited.

The restaurant staff stood frozen behind the counter.

The bikers exchanged uncertain glances.

The tattooed man suddenly realized something.

These men weren’t behaving like a gang.

They weren’t shouting.

They weren’t threatening anyone.

They were behaving like professionals who already knew exactly what they were supposed to do.

One of them walked directly toward the tattooed man.

He stopped in front of him and extended a smartphone.

“Someone would like to speak with you.”

The younger man stared at the phone.

“Who?”

“You’ll find out.”

He reluctantly took it.

“Hello?”

For several seconds there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice answered.

“Good evening.”

The tattooed man’s expression changed.

He recognized the voice immediately.

It was the same voice that had spoken to the elderly man earlier.

The calm, authoritative voice.

The voice of someone who had been listening from the beginning.

“Who are you?” the young man demanded.

“You don’t need to know my name.”

“Then why are you calling me?”

“Because you’re about to make another mistake.”

The young man looked toward the elderly gentleman.

The old man was still sitting quietly at the table.

“You know him?”

A pause.

“Better than you think.”

The tattooed man swallowed.

“What’s going on?”

The voice remained calm.

“You came into a restaurant and decided that an older man sitting alone was an easy target.”

The young man said nothing.

“You wanted him to be frightened.”

Another pause.

“You wanted everyone around you to believe you were powerful.”

The young man looked at the bikers behind him.

For the first time, none of them were smiling.

The voice continued.

“But power isn’t measured by how many people are willing to stand behind you.”

The tattooed man’s jaw tightened.

“Then what is it measured by?”

“By what you are willing to walk away from.”

Silence.

The young man looked at the phone.

Then at the elderly man.

Then at the men in suits.

Finally, he looked through the window at the line of black G-Wagons.

He understood.

The old man hadn’t called people to start a fight.

He had called people to make sure nobody could pretend they hadn’t seen what happened.

The elderly gentleman finally spoke.

“Sit down.”

The young man stared at him.

“What?”

“Sit down.”

Something about the old man’s voice made him obey.

Slowly, he pulled out a chair.

The room remained silent.

The elderly man pointed toward the broken plate.

“You should apologize to the staff.”

The young man looked at the floor.

For several seconds he didn’t move.

Then he turned toward the restaurant owner.

“I’m sorry.”

The owner nodded cautiously.

“Thank you.”

The old man continued.

“And you should apologize to the people sitting at this table.”

The tattooed man looked at him.

His pride clearly fought against his common sense.

Finally, he spoke.

“I’m sorry.”

One of the bikers lowered his head.

The tension in the room began to disappear.

The men in suits remained where they were.

They had no reason to move.

The elderly gentleman picked up his glass of water.

“You can leave now.”

The young man looked surprised.

“That’s it?”

“That’s it.”

“No threats?”

“No.”

“No punishment?”

The old man smiled.

“You’re confusing consequences with revenge.”

The young man remained silent.

The elderly man continued.

“Tomorrow you will remember this evening. You will remember how confident you felt when you believed nobody could challenge you.”

He paused.

“And you will remember the moment you realized you were wrong.”

The tattooed man slowly nodded.

He handed the phone back to the suited man.

The voice on the other end said one final sentence.

“Make better choices.”

The call ended.

The men in suits turned toward the exit.

Outside, engines started one after another.

The black G-Wagons slowly disappeared into the evening.

The tattooed man watched them leave.

Then he looked at the elderly gentleman.

“Who are you?”

The old man smiled.

“Just an old man who wanted to finish his dinner.”

The younger man almost laughed.

But this time there was no arrogance in it.

Only disbelief.

The restaurant slowly returned to normal.

The owner brought a new plate of food to the elderly gentleman.

“On the house.”

The old man smiled.

“Thank you.”

He picked up his fork.

Outside, the last black vehicle disappeared beyond the road.

Night settled over the city.

Inside the restaurant, the old man finally took his first bite.

And nobody interrupted him again.
