A Call to My Father

Her father had told her the same thing over and over again:

“Never get involved in the affairs of people who have something to hide. If I forbid you from doing something, there’s a good reason for it.”

Anna would only smile at that. She was twenty years old, considered herself fully grown, and was tired of living by the rules of a man who was constantly away on business trips and never talked about his work. Officially, her father, Victor Richter, was an international security consultant. Unofficially… she suspected his profession was far more dangerous.

A few days earlier, her new acquaintance, the charming and successful businessman Leonard Weiss, had invited her to an exclusive charity ball at an old castle on the outskirts of the city. Admission was granted only to those with a special invitation.

When Anna told her father about it, his expression changed instantly.

“You are not going.”

“Why?” she asked in surprise. “It’s just a ball.”

“Because I said so.”

“I’m not fifteen anymore!”

Victor let out a heavy sigh and looked at his daughter so seriously that she fell silent for a moment.

“There are people currently under surveillance. They are dangerous. If you see an invitation bearing the crest of a golden lion, stay away from them.”

That very crest was embossed on Leonard’s invitation card.

Anna was convinced her father was simply being overprotective. When he left that evening on yet another “business trip,” she put on her elegant emerald-green dress and secretly made her way to the ball.

The grand ballroom glittered beneath enormous crystal chandeliers. Leonard was polite and attentive, introducing Anna to influential guests. But little by little, she began to notice strange things. Some of the attendees spoke quietly in German, constantly glanced around the room, and exchanged small black envelopes.

Suddenly, she overheard a conversation behind a marble pillar.

“Has the agent not found us yet?”

“No. But if he’s here tonight, we’ll expose him.”

A cold shiver ran down her spine.

For the first time, she regretted not listening to her father.

Leonard noticed her unease.

“Is everything alright? You look pale.”

“I… I think I’d like to go home.”

His smile vanished instantly.

“Go home? Now? No, Anna… the evening has only just begun.”

He grabbed her arm.

Far too tightly.

“Let me go.”

“You are Viktor Richter’s daughter, aren’t you?”

Anna froze.

“How do you know my father?”

Leonard smiled coldly.

“So it’s true. What a fortunate coincidence.”

He led her into the center of the ballroom. The music stopped. Guests turned curiously to watch. Some seemed to understand immediately what was happening. Others waited eagerly to see what would come next.

Anna tried to pull away, but Leonard shoved her back. She nearly lost her balance. The slap he delivered, almost casually, instantly left her right cheek glowing red. Her lipstick smeared across her skin.

The magnificent ballroom fell completely silent.

With a trembling hand, Anna pulled out her phone and pressed it to her left ear.

“Dad… come get me.”

Leonard let out a mocking laugh.

“Aww… she’s calling Daddy.”

Grinning, he turned toward the crowd.

“Do you all see this?”

Some guests looked away uncomfortably. Others began to laugh nervously. The rest remained silent.

“Do you really think he’ll come?” Leonard whispered. “And even if he does… he’s already lost.”

Anna couldn’t answer.

At that moment, the massive double doors of the ballroom slowly began to open.

Viktor stepped out of the light.

But this was no longer the quiet, reserved father Anna knew from home. His eyes were ice-cold, his movements precise, and every step of his heavy boots echoed through the ballroom.

Slowly, he swept his gaze across the crowd until it settled on Leonard.

In a calm but dangerous voice, he said:

“You laid a hand on my daughter?”

The grin vanished from Leonard’s face. He spun around in shock.

“That… that’s impossible. You were supposed to be somewhere else!”

Viktor took another step forward.

“How dare you?”

The next instant, he lunged forward.

Leonard hurriedly reached inside his jacket, trying to pull something out, but Viktor was already upon him. With one swift movement, he knocked Leonard’s hand aside, grabbed him by the collar, and nearly lifted him off the ground.

“You used my daughter as bait?” Viktor asked in a voice that was frighteningly calm.

Despite the pain, Leonard forced a smile.

“No… she came here willingly.”

Anna had never seen her father like this.

Within seconds, he overpowered two more men who rushed to Leonard’s aid. Somewhere in the background, people screamed and began scattering in panic.

Then Anna noticed something no one was supposed to see.

Several of the guests were not wealthy partygoers at all. As if responding to a secret signal, they drew concealed weapons and moved to surround the ballroom.

The entire event had been a trap.

“Dad! Behind you!”

Viktor spun around.

A gunshot thundered through the ballroom.

The bullet struck the enormous chandelier hanging above them, and thousands of crystal fragments rained down upon the guests.

Viktor pushed his daughter behind a massive marble column.

“Listen to me carefully!” he ordered. “Run to the north exit and trust no one. Not even the police!”

“I’m not leaving without you!”

“That’s an order!”

But in that moment, Anna had already understood the truth. Her father really was a secret agent who had been operating under a false identity for years. And all the lies had served a single purpose: to protect her.

A few minutes later, a special forces unit stormed the ballroom. A gunfight erupted. Leonard was arrested, but in the chaos, one person managed to escape.

When it was all over, Viktor silently placed his daughter into the car. They drove through the night city for a long time without saying a word.

Finally, Anna asked quietly:

“Did you know they would use me?”

Viktor tightened his grip on the steering wheel.

“No. But I knew they would eventually find a way to get to me.”

He stopped in front of the house and pulled a small silver key from his pocket.

“There is something I have been hiding from you for twenty years.”

“What is it?”

“The key to a safety deposit box your mother left for you.”

Anna looked at him in disbelief.

“But… Mom died when I was still little.”

Viktor slowly shook his head.

“That’s exactly what everyone was meant to believe.”

At that moment, his phone vibrated. He looked at the display — and for the first time in many years, real fear appeared in the face of the seasoned agent.

A single message appeared on the screen:

“We know she now knows the truth. Next time, you won’t be able to save her.”

Below it was a photo.

It had been taken only seconds earlier.

Anna and Viktor were in it — exactly where they were standing right now.

Someone was watching them. Right at that very moment.
